Alluri Sitarama Raju (1897-1924) was an Indian revolutionary and freedom fighter from Andhra Pradesh, India. He was a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement, and is remembered for his role in the Rampa Rebellion of 1922-24.
Born in Pandrangi village in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh, Raju was a member of the Kondadora community, who were considered to be one of the most backward communities in Andhra Pradesh during the British colonial era. He was deeply influenced by the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian National Congress, but eventually became disillusioned with their non-violent methods and turned to armed rebellion.
Raju organized the tribal people of the Andhra region, who were oppressed by British colonial rule, and led them in a revolt against the British authorities. He launched a guerrilla warfare campaign against the British, attacking police stations, government buildings, and railway lines. He also advocated for the rights of tribals and fought against the exploitation of land by the zamindars.
Raju’s rebellion, known as the Rampa Rebellion, lasted from 1922 to 1924. He was eventually captured by the British and was killed in a gunfight in the forests of Chintapalli in Andhra Pradesh in 1924. His legacy continues to inspire many in Andhra Pradesh and across India.
