Stolen Pet Laws in India

Posted on March 10, 2023March 10, 2023 By motimat 3 Comments on Stolen Pet Laws in India

Pet theft is a criminal offense in India, and the person responsible for stealing a pet can be charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act. Some of the relevant sections of the IPC that can be applied in pet theft cases include:

  • Section 378 – Theft
  • Section 379 – Punishment for theft
  • Section 406 – Punishment for criminal breach of trust
  • Section 411 – Dishonestly receiving stolen property

In addition to these sections, the PCA Act of 1960 also provides for punishment for animal theft, cruelty, and neglect. The Act states that anyone who steals or causes injury to any animal shall be punished with imprisonment for up to three months, or a fine, or both.

The laws around pet theft and animal cruelty in India are taken very seriously, and penalties for these offenses can range from fines to imprisonment. However, it is important to note that the legal process can be slow, and it may take time to track down and prosecute the person responsible for stealing a pet. It is therefore essential to take preventive measures to protect pets from theft, such as keeping them in a safe and secure area, ensuring that they are always wearing identification tags, and using microchips or GPS trackers to locate them in case they are stolen or lost.

My Pet is Missing, What Should I do?

If your pet is missing, here are some steps you can take to increase the chances of finding your pet:

  1. Search your home and neighborhood: Start by searching your home and the surrounding area, including your backyard, nearby parks, and local streets. Look for any signs of your pet, such as footprints, fur, or food bowls. Call out your pet’s name and listen for any response.
  2. Ask your neighbors: Ask your neighbors if they have seen your pet, and give them a description of your pet. Ask them to keep an eye out for your pet and to contact you if they see anything.
  3. Post flyers: Create flyers with a recent photo of your pet and your contact information. Post them in your neighborhood, at local stores, and on community bulletin boards. Make sure to include information on any unique markings or features your pet may have.
  4. Use social media: Share a post on social media with a photo of your pet, a description, and your contact information. Ask your friends and followers to share the post to help spread the word.
  5. Contact local animal shelters: Call and visit local animal shelters to see if they have picked up your pet. Leave a description and your contact information with them.
  6. Contact veterinary clinics: Call and visit veterinary clinics in your area and nearby areas to see if anyone has brought in your pet.
  7. Use a pet recovery service: Consider using a pet recovery service, such as PetAmberAlert or Lost Pet USA, to help locate your missing pet. For India: Submit Report Here

It is important to act quickly when searching for a missing pet. The sooner you start your search, the greater the chance of finding your pet. Remember to stay positive and never give up hope – many pets are eventually reunited with their owners.
