RTO stands for “Regional Transport Office”. In India, Regional Transport Office is a government organisation that is responsible to keep a track of all the vehicles on Indian roads. For this purpose, every vehicle in India should be registered in the nearby RTO. Every vehicle that is registered will vehicle registration card. Apart from vehicle registration or vahan registration, RTO is responsible for issuing driving licences, inspect vehicle insurance, and keep a tab of pollution created by vehicles.

As mentioned earlier, every vehicle is required to be registered with the local RTO by law. Once a new vehicle is registered with the Transport Ministry of India, a permanent RTO registration number is given. This is the permanent registration number of the vehicle forever. This number cannot be changed under any circumstances even when the vehicle is sold.

What is Temporary RTO Registration?

Unlike permanent RTO registration number, a temporary registration number is given by the dealer you buy the vehicle from. A temporary registration number is given to a brand new vehicle which is yet to be registered permanently. This temporary registration number is valid for a short time which is usually one month. WIthin this period, the vehicle should be mandatorily registered with the concerned RTO authority.

Vahan is an integrated software solution that is used mainly for vehicle registration in our country. Apart from vehicle registration, this system also performs other functions like renewal permit, issuing fitness certificate, and transfer of ownership of the vehicle which allows the Transport Department to focus on priority tasks.

All you have to do is send an SMS to Vahan to check the RTO details. Please send a SMS in the format – VAHAN{SPACE}VEHICLE NUMBER to 77382 99899 and you will get a reply in around 5 minutes. You will get the following information in the SMS:

  • Owner name
  • RTO office where the vehicle was registered
  • Fitness certificate expiry date
  • Ownership serial number ( If it is the first owner, second owner, or third owner)

How to get a fancy number for your vehicle?

Everyone loves to have a fancy vehicle number. Do you know how to be successful in vehicle fancy number booking? In most cities and towns, VIP number actions keep occuring. Through the VIP number auction, people are allowed to bid for a fancy vehicle number in most of the RTOs. In order to do so, one has to register online on the MInistry of Road Transport and Highway.

The state government will reserve few fancy numbers out of the series 1 to 9999. These numbers will not be alloted in the computer generated numbers. To get a fancy vehicle number, a person has to bid and pay a special fee. On a given date, the concerned RTO will list the fancy numbers that are available and the minimum price for the same. The bidders will be required to login to the account and select the numbers they wish to have and make the payment. Once the bid is open, the bidders can make a bid for the numbers they choose to have online. The results will be declared online and if the bidder is selected, the balance payment has to be made or the payment made before will be refunded. A bidder can download the allotment letter for reference.

What is RTO fee?

To get your vehicle registered or to renew your registration, you will be required to pay the RTO fees. The RTO registration fees depends on the type of vehicle you want to register. Refer to the table below for some of the fees:

What is Vehicle Registration Process?

After buying a vehicle from the dealer, the buyer has to register it before a specific period of time, which is usually one month. However, most dealers register the vehicle for the buyer in order to save their time. But, if you choose to register your vehicle by yourself, these are the documents you will need to produce:

  • Application form CMV20
  • Sale Certificate of the vehicle
  • Active insurance certificate
  • Valid address proof
  • Temporary Registration issued by the dealer
  • Registration fee
  • A copy of your PAN
