Property Agents Review for Professional Estate Agencies in Spain

What are people from Spain called?

People from Spain are commonly called Spanish or Spaniards. Spain, Spanish and Spaniard all derive from the Latin word “Hispania,” a term Romans used to describe the Iberian peninsula. There have been human settlements in the Iberian peninsula since the Neolithic era, as early as 30,000 to 40,000 years ago.
Spanish may also refer to one of the many languages spoken by the Spanish peoples of Spain. The language commonly referred to as Spanish is, in fact, Castilian, and it is one of the many languages spoken in Spain including Basque, Catalan or Valencian, Galician, Asturian, Aragonese, Occitan, Eonavian and Leonese.

Are people from Spain called Spaniards or Spanish?

Spaniards ARE Spanish!
Spaniard— a person from Spain (noun: person place or thing) “He is a Spaniard.”
Spanish— something or someone from Spain (adjective: deecribing a noun) “He is Spanish.”
“Spanish” of course, is also a noun, when referring to the name of the language. “He speaks Spanish.”
So, “That Spaniard is Spanish, and speaks Spanish.”
noun —Spaniard
adjective — Spanish
noun — Spanish (the language)
(Now for a personal rant) The WORST use of the word “Spanish,” in my opinion, is when people attribute it to people from ANY Spanish-speaking country. It is very common among non Spanish-speaking people here in the USA. “I have this little Spanish girl do my floors.” “My brother’s girlfriend is Spanish,” — all when these people might be Venezuelan, and Mexican, for example.
To top off the ignorant comment, if I let them know, “No, they aren’t ‘Spanish’…” I am blown off with an, “Ehhhhhh, you know what I mean!” —as if I were being the eccentric, “picky” one. As if it did not matter at ALL to completely disregard people’s countries…after all, they don’t count! Ugh…
Sometimes people calm down if you present the most obvious comparison — it is exactly like calling people from the USA “English,” because that is the name of the language spoken there.
